Background: The pituitary gland is overcome with adenoidal tumor or increases in size dramatically resulting in over production of ACTH which causes overstimulation of the adrenal glands to produce glucocorticoids. This is analogous to the horse being administered a steroid injection daily causing symptoms such as hairy coat, muscle wasting, etc. I call this condition the disease that "puts out the lights" in horses eyes. The adrenals become depleted and the horse is in severe "yin" deficiency with dopamine levels falling, resulting in lethargy, irritability and inability to control/compensate body temperature in extreme weather. Liver and kidney damage is common and deficiencies in the immune response with overall body strength and stamina affected. Stress of any kind affects activity parameters during showings, shipping, over-exertion, etc.
The causes of Cushing disease are probably age related, environmental and breed related. Cushing disease is progressive and eventually terminal - only the symptoms can be managed.
Kalavet treatment protocols:
Instead of pergolide, recomment using Core Level Pituitary Glandular Extract (Nutri-West Company), 4 to 6 crushed tablets per day mixed with food according to weight. Response is generally good with increased energy, ability to cope and improvement in hair-coat.
Milk Thistle Plus (Healing Barn.com) to support liver and kidney.
Remission as magnesium source - important for nerve and muscle health.
Hyluronic acid as anti-inflammatory and support of soft tissue damage (100mg per day).
Aswaganda (Amazon Discovery.com) as brain tonic and antioxidant.
Ulcer Aide (NutraCell Labs) - 2 to 4oz per day.
NuCell vitamin tonic.
Diet & Environment: Feed plain grains such as barley or oats (steam flaked) and ground flax. Avoid fertilizing fields, pesticides and pyrethrin sprays (refer to kalavet recommended fly/tick spray).
